Islamabad:Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) Islamabad
campus Network for Human and Social Development (NHSD) and different
national and international organisations have jointly launched a
campaign to familiarise masses with the basic techniques of managing natural and man-made disasters.
The initiative has come in the wake of the threats Pakistan is faced with and which require people to be well versed with the disaster management techniques in order to ensure their safety.
In connection with the campaign a one-day workshop was held here at SZABIST’s Islamabad campus where national and international experts discussed disaster management strategies. It was attended by the representatives from Save the Children, Action AID, Engineers without Boarder and many other organisations.
Experts shared with the students methods and techniques to tackle disasters so they could spread this message among the people enabling them to save their precious lives in case of a possible disaster, either natural or man made.
SZABIST has already started a week-long disaster management activity which is going to be carried out in three different stages.
In the first stage students will arrange a photographic and painting exhibition to raise awareness about disaster management through art and colour. In the second phase students will display disaster management
awareness charts and banners at banks, hospitals, shopping malls, parks
and other important points in the federal capital. In the third stage
there will be an awareness walk to educate the society on applying
various safety methods in case of possible disasters.
Meanwhile, speaking at the workshop the disaster management experts said that lack of knowledge about safety measures can jeopardise people’s life even during a minor disaster, therefore everyone should be equipped with the basic techniques to handle difficult situations.
They stressed that the key to safety during a disaster such as fire breakout, earthquake, blast or any other accident is to never panic rather act promptly but wisely as a stampede caused by rushing or frenzy can increases the chances of causalities.
SZABIST Director Syed Asad Hussain said that as responsible citizens we should all do whatever we can to help the government minimise losses or destruction caused by possible disasters. This can be best done by learning and teaching methods to tackle disasters and ensure individual as well as public safety. The news.
